Digital Dial Conversion - Fuel Gauge

  1. #1
    Hi all,

Done a digital dial conversion the other day and as some of you may know, on my old dials the fuel gauge didn't work, it was a matter of, if the light was off, i had fuel, if it was on, then i didn't lol.

Now I've fitted these dials, it read i had half a tank, when my analogues were reading empty. I've topped up £15 and drove around for a bit, and it's now settled a bit and is saying i have just under quarter of a tank of fuel.

Question is, how can i find out if this is acurate or if it's wrong and i need an updated fuel pump (i read this somewhere on the 106oc digital dial conversion guide)

Should i fill up a petrol can, and drive around until i run out, and see where it takes me? By having the can in the car, i can fill it up without being worried of being stranded with no fuel?

    Cheers in advance.

Fill it to the brim - drive it until the light comes on (take a note of how many miles you've done)

Then make a note of how many litres it takes to brim it again - work out mpg and see if you are pretty much in the ballpark figure

Any ideas how much it should cost to brim it?

This is going to be an expensive experiment lol.

I was going to fill up a can and drive until the car cut out pretty much and that would tell me where empty is on the gauge and at least i'd have fuel in the car to top back up.

You risk picking up all the shite in the tank - empty will be well below the gauge !

You'll easily have a good 40miles with the light on before it gets close to cutting out.

Brimming is the safest way tbh - or just take the fuel pump out the tank, and with the ignition on, move the float up and down and it should register on the dash.

Easy enough job to get the fuel pump out? I know where it all is as i had to change the fuel breather hose if you remember rightly so is it just unscrewing the surround and lifting it out?

Yeh just lift it out - fuel will get everywhere when you disconnect the hoses so just go careful with it

I got some brake clamp hoses that i used last time, so will use them again.

Will the tank need dropping again?

Just need to try and sort your ABS out !

If the ABS light isn't on then it sounds like the bulb in the dash has been removed/taped over so I'd get that replaced/sorted and fit a couple of new sensors

I know why the ABS light is on, i have NO abs on the near side front at all. Can't even see where it would connect into, so i've got the trace it from the servo and get an ABS connector/cable.

Got any laying about? lol As i currently have 3 wheels with ABS

lol - I don't have any ABS sensors.

Ebay is prob best bet - although I'd get a new one to make sure it's working !!

    3 wheel'd ABS doesn't sound much fun

Yeah, i'm watching a few on there at the moment, but going to ring some motor factor's tomorrow.

Wouldn't know, as i don't think i've EVER had my ABS kick in so i hope it all works barring that one lol.

If you run it until it runs out of petrol i'd change the fuel filter.. only like 7 quid and a two minute jobbie.

Fuel filter was changed about 3 weeks ago as well as oil filter and air filter.

Only spark plugs left to do but im thinking of waiting to do my JP4 head first as i believe they are different sparks although Bosch list the same part number, NGK don't?
