Important! : Lambda sensor

How would I know if one was knackered. My car feels down on power and seems to go through petrol quite a bit. I had a look underneath my car this afternoon at my exhaust which I recently fitted and there was a load of black soot around where backbox links to centre pipe. Overfuelling maybe? The engine management light hasn't lit up.

Car is overdue for a service will be getting this done soon. I can't think of anything else that could be wrong. Would it be worth cleaning the sensors before replacing them or are they fucked? and presumeably it would be the "upstream" lambda sensor on top of manifold (fuelling) that would be the one causing this?
