Important! : Whining / Whistling Noise.... Could it be my wheel bearing going ?

  1. #1
Ive had this problem since i came back from skegness on a fairly long drive on the motor way... Its a whistling noise, a constant whistle... coming from my front passenger side wheel or around that area.... when its happening its pretty loud too.

The noise speeds up when i speed up and slows down when i slow down, I wouldnt say the volume increases or decreases, as its pretty much a constant volume, but more like the pitch of the whistle goes lower and higher depending on my speed.

Its pretty constant now, too.... First five mins of driving, the noise isnt there... then when ive been driving for 5 or 10 mins the whistle starts happening. Any ideas people, Thanks !

No, pads need doing to be fair. But being as it just came from the front passenger side i thought it would be a wheel bearing... Ive heard that a wheel bearing is more of a whine/ Hum... where as my noise is more of a whistle like a tweet front a bird.... But not just intemittent whistles... Its a constant noise Whistle..... Like an old fashioned teapot thats boiled ( remember how they used to whistle ).... Lol.... that sort of whistle

Its the bearings, happened on me last car, it only starts after 5mins cos they heat up then the noise starts. get it looked at asap because in worst cases the wheel can come off while driving.

thanks mate... that IS what i needed to hear, but ISNT what i wanted to hear lol.... But i am on the case asap ! Im not driving it at the min.

Might pick one up today from GSF car parts there about 12.50 on here http://www.gsfcarparts.com ... and then arrange fitting myself.. My mechanic said about 20 quid for the part but if there cheaper on this sight and its the right one ...Why not ? The VTR mk2 is 4 stud isnt it.... ?

Is 40 quid fitting labour expensive... ?

I've had the same kind of noise, i had both my driveshafts replaced about 6 month ago and ever since the LHS has been whining slightly as you have described. I took it back to the garage last week and explained, they checked the wheel bearings and suspension and everything was ok, sod's law it didn't make the sound when they were in the car of course LOL. Prob gonna take it back again this week and tell them its got to have something to do with the LH DS.
Most garages vary but the cheapest i've come across is £25 PH however the one i used to do my shafts charged the warranty company £35 PH, might be worth asking around a few places first ?

go with quality rather than cheap mechanics (bonus if you find one that is both, personally never have.lol) ask you mates or people from your area which garages they would recomend. But 40quid is reasonable like.

If I cant do it myself then usually go to the garage in cullercoats under the metro bridge, only happened a couple of times it was wheel bearings and driveshafts and they were kanny with me, not the cheapest but the work is good and always finished quick.

You could try the lads at NE Tyres + exhausts on the silverlink, they might not do it there but will know someone cheap to sort it for you, ask the mechanics for craig or robbo.

LOL the irony is of course it was there where it was done I will admit though i've always took my cars there and they have been great.
