16v conversion

Alright thinking to buy a 16v off a mate to convert my rallye at some point. the engine is out of 01 plate gti.

but the engine has been sat in a 1997 shell.

the lad said its got an unlocked ecu. if my mate has just put a new engine in his gti why would he have to unlock the ecu? why wont the engine go if hes only changing the block of the engine?

well i supose you'll have to ask him that lol,

only thing i can think of is that if it was originally out of a 2001 reg car then it might have been a 3 plug ecu and if its going in to a 1997 reg car then he might have used his original single plug ecu and loom which would of meant he would have to unlock the ecu thats the only thing i can think off, its much easier to just buy a 16v engine from the same year as YOUR car will make the conversion so easy would only take a couple days

was the engine running in the 1997 reg car? and what year is your car?

well my rallye 97 and this gti is 97. So the loom should be fine. It was running before it was taken out of the car. Why would it make a difference if was a 3 plug. Surely you can just connect the single plug up to the new engine?

The rule on here is same year it will fit regardless, dont bother buying a 3 plug lol.. Just a question .. sorry to hijack, Im in the middle of a 16v conversion, My ecu is unlocked, but if it wasnt and i put my original key in would i not be able to turn it to the 1st and 2nd click or just not be able to start the car? Cheers.

    It just wouldn't start.

The conversion only takes 2 days even if your re-wiring the loom anyway. Maybe your mate just didn't understand that you can simply use the original ECU and loom to run the block and wasted some cash lol
