Strange occurance last night.

Last night as i was driving along i noticed that my brake pedal was getting firmer and firmer. It got to the point that the car was braking itself (brakes stuck on) and i could hardly move anywhere. When i pulled up and got out of the car you can imagine the smell and heat coming from the brakes. As far as i know, all 4 were locked up. I had to leave the car standing for about an hour before they all free'd up again. Does anyone know what would have caused this and if it will happen again?

    Jamie.

Im just having a stab in the dark but did you have enough brake fluid in your car? Was the warning light on the dash?

a guess it could be air in the system? if one caliper is binding, then it will overheat and cause the air to expand and press against the other 3 brakes

might as well bleed them, for peace of mind

Yeah, air in the system, check for air bubbles/bleed the brakes.

    Replaced them recently? (Brakes)

I think rail roader may be along the right lines, good theory mate.

However what has caused the heat build up in the first place? I would be changing brake master cylinder as a matter of precaution as well as fresh fluid in the system.
