high pitched noise

i've always had a faint squealing noise, but recently its become loud, and noticeable to passers by. which is mildly embarrassing having people turn and look at you. i've had my fanbelt changed recently and it isn't loose, what the hell is this noise i'm hearing!

The alternator belt could be too tight causing the bearings in the alternator to make a noise. According to haynes manual, when pussing down firmly down with your thumb on the belt, it should move about 5mm. If its rock solid, it needs slackening off.

gearbox or cv joint kinda problem?

If it whines as you rev it, the cambelt could be too tight but you said it only does it when moving.

Could be gearbox but i'm certainly no expert, just throwing ideas at you really.

Defo sounds gearbox related. A lot of saxos/106s have slightly whining gearboxes (mine does slightly)

You can pick up a gearbox for like £70 from a scrap yard, but get it investigated by a mechanic, it may be something simple!
