Quick question about MOT fails

  1. #1
The sax failed MOT on 'excessively corroded offside brake pipe' and 'nearside brake load sensing valve linkage seized' as well as a couple of other minor things.

Does anyone know if the linkage can usually be worked free or is it an expensive job for a new one? Any ideas where I can get one cheap??

Its on a 96 vtr, if that helps.

Depends on the state of it. Some can and some can't

Dont know how bad it is cos they still have the car, the lad said he would have a look at it tomorrow as well as the little niggles.

Ive never even heard of these before, what do they do??

Come on someone must know what it does???

I think it measures how low the back end sits due to extra passengers weight and makes the back brakes stronger the lower it is.

Dont know how artificially lowering affects it though, Ive never had any experience of lowering.

your brake load sensing basically, stops your rear wheels locking up when you put your foot on the brakes.
as iirc *correct me if im wrong* furtherest point away from the master has the most pressure! so this needs to be compensated, so it splits to the fronts before the rears.

its a spring basically! if its just the linkage, then its a simple fix, tbh, even if its the whole unit that needs replacing its a simple fix! as you would need to unbolt your brake pipes from it, and remove it, secure a new ones and put the pipes back in!

as for the pipes, is it the brake pipe or the brake hose thats corroded?
a hose, again you can pick them up new for about a 5er! very simple to sort out, i got the Mrs to fit them when i was changing my brakes last time! if she can do it, anyone can!

brake pipes, will need to be cut, new pipe put in place and then nuts onthe end and flared.
problem is, the origional pipes are steel *again correct me if im wrong* and to flare on the car isnt easy! replacement will be copper, alot easier to shape, and flare!

either way an hour tops should cover it!

That sounds like rubbish. It probably stops the rear brakes locking with light passenger load, which is the same principle I described earlier. The hydraulic pressure in the brake system will be the same everywhere.

so when bleeding the system, you bleed the furthest point first?

Whats that got to do with brake pressure? Bleeding removes air bubbles, you bleed the top pipes first, that is where the pipes come out of the master cylinder. I have had different cars with different bleeding patterns. Some you start at front one side, do rears, then front the other side.

Right this is basically a load spring, had one of these on my corsa and it was a pain in the arse till I chopped it off, basically when you have fat people n the back of the car more brake force has to go to the rear wheels otherwise under braking they would try to overtake the front cos they are not being slowed at the same rate.

When you lower the car it has the same affect as having fat people in the back, locking the rear brakes cos more power gets put to the rear brakes.

Its obviously a requirement to have one of these or they wouldnt have failed my mot, but its getting taken off if I am correct cos the back is getting lowered next week.
