knocking noise

   asking for a mate..its a 106 gti
   
   hard to describe, bad knocking noise coming from front of car when driving?
   
   -knocking/ rotating noise
   -only happens when driving
   -rumbles the whole car
   
   not very descriptive but its the best i can do?...
   
   any suggestions greatly appreciated,
