Possible cut & shut?

    Hi,

Recently been going to see a furio (51 plate, 2002) that im interested in buying, done some checks on it and its come back as no respray, no write off, no stolen records and no total loss claim by insurance etc etc...

Garage says they have full serv history etc for it, I still need to look at that though, but heres some problems....

    1. Under the back seat was soaking last week, garage said that a pressure washer did it somehow, went today again and its all dry there now so nothing must have been leaking.

    2. Boot is wet below the carpet slightly, and the foamy boot layer is soaked. Mate told me his saxo did this and the garage re did the seals on the back lights and that fixed the problem for him, so im assuming that would fix it too?

    3. Engine all looks fine, chassis number matches up with the plate, but there's one thing I noticed today, even after having a mechanic from different places to come have a look at it and them saying its all fine bar the brakes. There are what looks like weld marks and sealer on the two bits at the top right of the engine (no idea what they are, they have circular bits on them that a strut brace can be put onto) the welds are halfway down it and on the inside of it.

There also looks to be overspray on these parts too, but is that just on all the cars?

The car is black and the exhaust is also black too, well the tip is anyway, do all black furios/vt? have this? As im thinking it might have been in a crash, not claimed on, fix, total respray and then sold on.

Also, very many parts in the engine bay look to be fairly new or very very clean. I will have a look on service history for it though and check whats been replaced.

    4. There is a dent on the steering wheel where the airbag comes out, matches perfectly as if a head would have hit it, but the airbag light is fine and there doesn't look to be anything tampered with.

The car is however fine to drive, needs an MOT though, so in the test would it fail if its found out to be a cut and shut?

Might just be me over worried but im not too sure.

    Thanks if you can help

I think you're right to be nervous tbh.

It does sound like it's been in a front ender and had a new front end put on it.

There are plenty of cars out there so if you are unsure I'd 100% walk away. It's not the sort of car you'd want to be in a crash with if it's had a new front end welded on - the saxos are bad enough already.

If you want to post up a picture then we can give an opinion on it as it's easy to read somthing and make a judgement, a picture speaks 1000words

sounds quite suspicious. if there is welding that looks fresh or shouldnt be there then get someone who can weld to tell you or find pics on here and compare to see the difference but depending on the price i wouldnt touch it with a barge pole.

    Thanks

Price is £2450, but he said he can get that down as im not part exing.

Ill go there again tomorrow and get some pics of it, taking another mechanic to have another look at it too.

Compared it with mates furio and he didn't have any welds, but his engine was also different as his was W reg so we couldn't be sure.

If you can get a couple of pics of the problems then we can give you our opinions.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing about being cautious.

Did a cambelt for somebody and saw that his car had been in a front ender - he wasn't to impressed when I pointed it out to him.

should be no welds near the strut tops, sounds like its had a front end cut welded on

+1 walk away. lots more good saxo's about.

Ill get some pics of it tomorrow to show, odd thing is though I followed them and I don't think they went right down the bodywork. Ill double check though.

No idea how I never noticed them before really, they are quite easy to spot, the sealer/filler does look to be a shoddy job though so I am thinking it is a different font end.

Only thing is the paint, all matches up fine all over the car, with the tip being black too though and the overspray on the strut tops it could have been a total respray job.

The garage is pretty shite though tbh, looked at another 2 saxo's there and one has rust in the engine bay and other had huge rust in the boot and over the car.

They buy the cars very very cheap and do repair jobs on them, but I would have thought a cut and shut would be a way too big a job.

You could pick up a much neater car by the sounds of it for that price mate,
It's great that you've noticed these things sooner rather than later, there are plenty of tidy saxo's around so don't worry!

Newer welds would be quite obvious to spot to be honest would look much more 'fresh' compared to the previous welds, look for other welds in the same area and compare.

With the air bag light, the bulb could have easily been removed etc..

If you do assume cut and shut (which it is certainly hinting towards) probably best to let the police know, seen something about informing them on auto trader

that happened to mine, its the boot seal, lets water in and it runs under the back seats,it can also come in over the boot lock bit above the number plate

yea for that price you can get a nicer car

Sounds dodgy, You'll find a nice saxo for that price easy else where.
