clutch judder (only in 1st)

a friend brought his 03 vts to me today for me to take a look at.

it judders quite violently when you floor it but only in 1st. the clutch does not slip etc at other speeds or when trying to provoke it.

both upper breather pipes and the egr valve on the side of the head appear to be leaking a lot of oil. it is down the side of the engine and all over the gearbox. i have had the crank sensor and bracket off for a look. the flywheel is bone dry. i am wondering if the clutch has absorbed some oil?

    i think i have x2 options

1- repair the leaks and give a good blast with clutch cleaner (box etc still on car) and hope it clears eventualy.

2- go right in with a new cluctch and stop the leaks also

    cheers for any help.

Strange its only doing it in 1st mate, any juddering when it pulls off? Usually a sign of dodgy clutch springs

not that i can remember. i never drove the car just sat passenger. drove off respectively and smoothly. then once rolling 5-10mph, floored it and it juddered badly.

id be concerned as to why the breather pipe is leaking excessive oil, normally this is because of high crankcase pressure- a result of engine wear such as worn piston rings

    both are worn and loose.

I personally would sort out the egr leak and oil leaks.
The clutch would pretty much react the same through all the gears and speeds. The fact it does it in first only seems something more electronic based. Such as lambda sensor screwing up with the odd readings from the leaks? Could be the coilpack. I remember the coilpack on one car i repaired only had a fault in 2nd gear at 5-6k revs the rest of the time it was perfect

it feels far more mechanical than a missfire.

i will be removing the gearbo in 1 week to look at the clutch/flywheel...

i had this exact problem and the spline on the drive sharft had worn and it was slipping as i accelerated hard. the haynes manual is very helpful to check the cv joint ect. hope this helps.

do you have any pictures of the worn shaft? was it very visible?

i guess i will find out as i have to remove both of these anyway.
