Torque

This is one area I feel the 16v is lacking well not lacking it just needs more lower down.

I want to fit a set if fast road cams to the car but I know this will shift it even higher on the rev range.

What I'd like to know is in comparion to standard does a "cammed" car produce less torque In the lower rpm or the same/more.

And other than boost what the best way go get a bit more low down go.

    Discuss.

a mild/fast road cam will retain or gain torque at low rpm. a high lift race cam will give more torque than standard but it will be further up the rpm range.

the only way to get steep low down torque results will be with cc... so either stroking or boring out.

lighend and balanced bottem end maybe

Thanks danny it would be good to see some side by side graphs to see if they were the same/higher/lower on the torque curve

Stroker kit will help power in the lower rev range. Super charge or turbo would do wonders but as you can no boot. A nice set of throttle bodies with the correct length track and a ECU with a high sample rate will help greatly but there design and implementation would be critical. Its a lot simpler to just move the torque up the rev range and it will give you over all the performance your looking for. Or if you really must have power at low rpm you can always stick a diesel engine in there

    Shorter gearing?

Shorter gearing would damage fuel economy.
I think that's what the problem is I have been driving a diesel.
Maybe just an adjustment in driving style is needed. I would still like to see some graphs to compare though.

i thought with cams the engine revs higher even in idle which would improve accelration there for i expect the torque to improve.

I thought throttle boddies helped with low down torque/pick up across mid range, not so much more than standard at peak, but better/smoother curve on graph? Not cheap though or am I incorrect?

andy best way is to go rolling road play with cam timing as standard and see were gains are iirc luthor1 he told me ages ago when he did his he gained 10flb fiddling arounf

Skimming the cylinderhead for a higher compression ratio would deffiantly increase torque. You will have problems with detonation though with a vts due to them already having a high CR standard. Using super fuel with additives will overcome this.
