Gimp mode.... I mean limp mode??

Now before I'm flamed I have done a search and it seems that some people swear by this and some say its a myth. It is mentioned in the haynes but doesn't say how to test it.

I did a compression test today which was ballsed up by my mom not putting the throttle on when cranking it, but I appear to have a compression issue anyway but the car was running ok this morning. Now it sounds like its running on 3 cylinders and missfires/ bogs down and doesn't build up speed well although it will rev to 5k but I've not tried further lol.

All I have done is disconnected the coil pack but not the battery. Would this be sufficient enough to trigger limp mode? or have I fucked the bores doing the compression test which I find unlikely lol

I won't be checking if removing the battery helps until tomorrow as I left the car at my parents lol

I don't know about the limp mode thing, but unplug the battery for a few hours to reset everything - should be fine after.

You won't have buggered the bores doing the compression test

Didn't think I would, I've either buggered the coil pack, disturbed a wiring fault or its in gimp mode. Even though I do appear to have a compression leak it should atleast run sas before so fingers crossed for tomorrow lol

i had a similar problem. mine seemed like it was firing on 3 went in limp mode engine management light came on took it for diagnostics that came up wiv lambda and map sensor, changed em no difference trned out be the coilpack. ran sweet as after that

I don't have an ECU light wired in (the joys of retrofitting eh?.... looks like I'll be running a new wire tomorrow aswell lol) but I'm sure if I did it would be on. I think its a case of try ECU reset if that doesn't work try C2 coil pack, if that doesnt work then re-wire plug (from what I can gather some don't need re-wiring and some do). If none of that works I'm going to throw a spanner at something or someone lol

Yes to be honest calling it a day on the AX had crossed my mind as its not been right for over 12months now and not even this new engine has worked out for me so I'm pig sick and fed up lol but I would totaly miss the chavs faces when they get destoyed by a "1.1i"

It'll cost me nothing to re-wire the lpug to fit my C2 coil pack but I didn't want to use it lol but thanks anyway mate

Mine was giving the same symptoms as your it would rev but bogged down and missing bad, i tried coil and sensors........ turned out to be a dodgey injector dude. get a set of secondhand injectors and give a try, new they are near on 70 squid new! each.

Ha ha next time you drop a spark plug check the electrode hasn't been mashed together! doh!.... car runs as it was before now.... rings are fucked though

Sorry to hear about the rings

it hasn't done many miles has it? Could it have been how the rings were run in?

Could have been that, I don't pretend to be an expert but several people have told me that even if I'd thrashed it from the start it wouldn't have killed the rings. I ran it in according to the Puma Racing guide but obviously somethings gone awry. It seems I was destined to change rings at some point but it does defeat the purpose of having a low mileage block lol. since I'm going to be stripping it down anyway I'm going to do the gasket aswell.

The only other reason I can think for it killing the rings is that it was sat for over a year before it was run in or that the ignition and fueling are way out (as I'm running 106 gti management). Hopefully once its sorted I'll have it up to scratch again just a kick in the nuts (or atleast the cams fund anyway lol)

Yeh I think the puma racing guidance seems to be the best way to run in an engine to me.

Sounds like an expensive thing to change the rings over, great time to go with some nice forged items future proof yourself

I'm going to struggle to afford standard parts to be honest but its either re-ring this one or my GTi (Gti was probably better although I had to empty the catch tank every 2 days lol). I'm pricing it up this week and then going to have to commit some money somewhere. I'm tempted to drop a cheap 1.1 back into it so I can take longer building it up
