Power steering pump

my power steering pump is on its way out, makes a squeeling noise.
my mates had a look and says its safe to drive, that if the pump breaks it would just make the steering hard.

    just wanted a 2nd opinion.

    is it safe to drive?

got quoted £215 for new pump. is this too high?

    its a saxo furio 1.4 x reg

yeah ive got a W 1.4 and my power steering pump went. its safe to drive its just really hard.

But hang on if you turn your engine on, when the pump starts squeling hit it with a hammer until it stops. i did this for a few days and now its perfectly fine!!

preferably use a rubber ended one so it doesnt dent your pump

lol how hard to steer is it? as in just a car without power steering, or harder than that?

its harder than that because there ment to have power steering, the linkages are different, but seriosly i fixed my power steerin pump with a hammer, i keep the hammer in my car just in case it goes again but its good fun

is it more of a whining noise? and is it always there or only when steering?

its there when idling, when i turn the steering wheel the noise tends to get worse. its deffo the pump can hear it when i look under the bonnet.

it sounds like a stylophone lol

just a high pitched noise, like a buzzer. cant describe it.

The cheapest options going to be 2nd hand but then a 2nd hane one might not have much life left in it either.

Hitting it with a hammer is only a temporary fix...when it starts playing up like that its on its way out and will go sooner or later.

Cheapest quote i got from breakers is £45 (north London) i think you get a bit of warranty as well from them. I hope this helps, good luck ps, i've got similar problem, mine's been making a noise for at least 4 months, and it's suddenly got worse, that's why i got quotes on them!

ring around motor engineer places, thats what i did do because the problem with mine was that the mechanism inside was all clogged up and some places will do a refurbishment

Don't be silly and pay £215 for a new pump, just get one from a breakers or ebay, You can pick a second hand one up for around the £40-£50 mark
