slight rubbing but what if i did this

i have a slight bit of rubbing on the back with weight in the boot in running 185 55 r14 tyres at the mo, how much more room would i have if i changed to 175 50 r14? would it give more room between tyre and arch and roughly how much more room would i have?

when i had 16s on had 205 40 r16 on the back an 45s front, it does seem to give a litl more clearance if its only just touching. tyres are more expensive tho i think, not so common size

Looking at your progress thread you are lowered with VTR wheels

Thats the same setup the GF used to have on her desire

    This is what we did.
removed side strip, cut arch, put side stip back on.
    stoped most of the rubbing

No rubbing at all now it has a VT kit on

it'll give you 5mm of extra clearance, plus as reeves has said, cost of tyre price would go up as they're not a common size. Not really worth it imo, I'd do what Simon suggested.

I've got 194/45/15 tyres on my lowered saxo and have had the boot full and not rubbed, although its got a vt kit, would that make a difference?

    Makes a lot of difference

This is how much extra metal was cut away fitting the VT kit

Wow! you've actually got to cut that much off a flat arch shell to fit a vt kit?

Thats quite a surprise lol, mines a westie so came with the kit as standard lol so no clue lol

    thats a lot of cutting

you can just roll the lip in the arch, that should do the trick! done it to mine

    Incorrect.
First off you'd get an extra 10mm from reducing from 185 to 175 width tyres, then you'd gain the difference between 185/55 and 175/50 (185mm wide and 55% of 185mm sidewall compared to 175mm wide and 50% of 175mm).
As mentioned in at least 1 previous thread different manufacturers making the same size tyres is sometimes quite large, so it might be worth living with the rubbing and trying a different brand of tyre when replacing them next time.
