Heatwrapping 16v Manifold Queries

  1. #1
Got a Janspeed 16v Manifold, just got a few questions.

What are the advantages to heatwrapping an exhaust manifold?

How much is needed to wrap a manifold? (Mine is a 4-2-1 if it matters)

Are there any disadvantages to wrapping a manifold?

    All help will be thanked.

    Cheers

    Dan

Advantages = Cooler engine bay temps and better exhaust flow

Disadvantages = The wrap does end up looking nasty after a while and can sometimes cause manifolds to crack iirc

some people say that if using a mild steel manifold, moisture can build up beneath the wrap and cause premature rusting leading to failure.
Although the manifold on my 205 is wrapped and has been fine for as long as i've had it.
So i will be heat wrapping the manifold on my saxo soon

Mite effect pulse tunning due to the exhaust gases flowing faster but tbh you wouldn't notice the difference.

    Thanks lads.

Any ideas on roughly how much wrap i will need?

    50 meters IIRC

There is a guide to heatwrapping a manifold on sax-p search for it im shure it tells you there

ive gotta say 50 meters sounds ridiculous, your not heat wrapping your car lol

The only other thing I can add is if you still have the cat installed on the car be very careful about heat wrapping. The additional heat applied to the cat will cause it fail prematurely...

    Another reason to decat!

whats the advantage of heat wrapping the whole exhaust, ive seen a couple people do it but i can see an advantage to this

It's retain as much of the temperature of the gas as possible (so the temperature doesn't dissipate along the exhaust system), this theoretically maintains the flow velocity and therefore yields better engine response and a bit more power since the piston on the exhaust stroke doesn't have to push as 'hard' to force the exhaust gases out.

    it's 50 Feet not 50m btw

I stand corrected it was for a full exhaust

ive been a little put off since reading oil spilled onto someones and eventually set the car alight

whos car was that on? hope it wasnt too bad.

i know i wont be using heatwrap again after it cracked my manifold

Also heard of this, i think on driftworks someone spilled some oil on his wrap couldnt get it out then on the dyno it got so hot it set the heat wrap on fire.

    i think yeah, wasn't it a 106 iirc?

simple dont spill oil on the manifold..
