Noisy engine!!

    hi i have just bought a very nice white pug 106 gti its on a R reg and its only done 53000miles,when you start the car it just sounds like a normall engine should but not long after you can hear what sounds like the tappets from just the right side of the head(opposite side of oil cap) ive had similar prob on a vts ive had and people told me not to worry but the noise does your head in sometimes...!ive been told the additives are CRAP and best way is to take cams out and clean them all or get new ones??i dont want to be spending cash when i ant gotta.the guy i bought it off had it for the last 8years itas had 4 owners including him and he only drove it really in winter cus he had a motorbike it only has done 3000miles since last m.o.t which was a year ago!!people told me its because it hasnt been used alot and to just put thicker oil in??PLEASE HELPPPPP

    thicker oil is not a good idea. Change the oil and filter, put in good quality oil of the recommended viscocity (not sure off the top of my head-sorry). It may be that the lifters are gummed up with old oil. If this does not work then it's time to look at replacing lifters I would have thought.
