Rattling In first gear

Hi guys, just been looking into getting a saxo vtr for few weeks now and i think i found myself a nice little runner but the bloke says there is a faint rattling in first gear until about 20mph, now obviously i dont want to buy this car for me to have to pay out some major cash to repair it! any advice on what it could be and if it is to much hassle and look for a different sale? Cheers

Depends where the rattle is coming from really, my saxo rattles a lot from the exhaust pipe, mainly at low revs and speeds, and all it is is the baffles in the silencers are on the way out, needs new boxes but thats all.

Hi, it doesnt say where its coming from but he said he thinks it needs a new gearbox bearing? so im guessing its coming from the gearbox, which will prob involve taking out the gearbox. I just trying to work out how much it would cost to get involved in this car.

    Hi Ross,

If right then an input/layshaft bearing is £10 and a complete gearbox bearing refurb kit £65. You'll need to be pretty handy with the tools and have access to a press.

There is a detailed step-by-step gearbox refurb guide on how to change each bearing in a gearbox in the Premium Members Articles section.

Whilst there you'd also change the entire clutch, pressure plate and release bearing.

If you get someone else to rebuild the gearbox then you are looking at £££s of labour. A second hand gearbox - of unknown condition is around £100.

Thanks mate that really helped alot, so you think it may be worth buying a second hand entire gearbox or buying the parts myself individually? I have a mate who may be able to do it for me so hopefully wont have to pay loads in labour at garage!
