Took my car to garage today as car has a gear selector problem, sometimes wont let me into 1st, 2nd etc. Said i needed new gear linkages, ball joint and some rods or something? he later told me im better of scrapping the car :O 2001 saxo desire, 69,000 genuine mileage. Is he being an arse? shall i get it fixed? how much will this cost and where can i get the parts
. thankyou

#2yeah sounds like he is being an arse to me.
if he's a fat fucker they can be a bit of a twat to do need small girlish hands (they help anyway)
johny -
#3theres some linkages on ebay, anyone know which ones i need?
also he says gear ball joint or something? what is this?
-
#4To be honest i'd take it to another garage and find out exactly whats needed, and get a price off them (itemised) for what needs doing. Then you have a list of the parts you need and you can buy them off here or ebay and see if someone's local to fit them for you (for a small fee obviously
)
-
#5i know its deffinatly the gear linkages but what else, i do not know so will get a second opinion

anyone know which ones on ebay are the right ones for my 1.1 desire
-
#6lol he probs knows someone or is after himself a cheap run about
if you agreed to scrap it guareed he would have it himself
it will need a set of linkages and the ball joint he means could be the control arm? with the rubber ball on the end i presume
but as said get it back and take it elsewhere -
#7the gear linkanges are universal mate. ones off a 1.1 are the same as ones off a vts. Just put some 1.1 106 ones on my vts. exactly the same so ignore them on that. Scrapyard best bet, i paid £3 for mine
. As for ball joints dont cost a massive deal £30 tops and they arent that hard to fit even for a first timer or someone who isnt mechanically savvy.
If i was you, get another opinion and ignore the ignorant arses. -
#8Hi, Here is a little more to add to what the others have posted above:
2) Citroen part 2449 65 "CONTROL RETURN" which is about £36.85 inc VAT or try a breaker

thanks for all the help -
#11get sum uprated ones off ebay 30 40 quid it will stop the problem happening in the future as they wont pop off causing u to lose certain gears easy job to fix anyway
-
#12are these correct? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITROEN-SAXO-G...item4cee8856a4 just wanna know before i buy
-
#13they are the usual parts in the gear linkage that fail so i'd guess these are the parts that the guy means
-
#14yeah i know its definatly the linkages, just need to find out the other bits and bobs.
Those linkages would fit my saxo tho yeah?
thankyou for the help

#20go for standard ones, ignore these 'uprated ones'1 user thanked this post:

#22Having fitted a few of them for people I can say that some of them are a bitch to fit, others fine, and can be utter pain to remove in the future.
I'm sure they do 'tighten' up the gearchanges.
Personally, I would rather run the oem shifter rods with a bit of 'play'/rubber in them to try and minimise any damage to synchro rings than mash it into gear. Some peopel swear by them though so they must do something to the gearchange -
#23right, i've finally got all my parts togetherrrr and was just wandering how much you think a garage should charge to do the work...so i dont get mugged off. I understand theres guides on here on how to change the linkages but i am not confident enough to do so.
I need parts 1,2,4,4,5 replacing however my 2 looks different? i will get some pictures.
Basically i would just be paying labour. Any rough ideas?
thankyou
