What is this picture?

Can someone tell me what this is which is rattling under my car (in the picture)? I've looked in the Haynes manual but nothing in there. Is it something to do with the handbrake? Does anybody know how I can stop the thing from rattling? Also if it is the handbrake, the garage fitted a new one last month but it's floppy as fuck and goes up to around 8 ratchets. Would their work be under warranty and would they have to fix it? Cheers.

    gear linkage dude!
have you still got the bush in the centre part?

like tonto said...if its definitely that rattling then its almost certain to be the bush worn, therefore metal wil be hitting metal

It's got a big rubber thing on the right hand side of it (in the pic) if that's what you mean. Is the gear linkage supposed to rattle around and if not would it be this that causes the knocking in low gears? Cheers mate.

in the pic, you have your selector rod, which is comming up from the gearstick, over the arb, into the slector / linkage... in that part / end of the slector there should be a big bush!
if that is worn / missing as this is common, it will rattle.

you will also find the gear stick has now become sloppy, and possibly finding it difficult getting into gears / reverse.
ive replaced mine TWICE now lol...

hmm you say it could be the handbrake... check the cables are knocking against anything, or that its not a head shield either.

is it when driving, certain revs, in neutral ticking over . . .

I might be monging here mate as the thing only rattles in neutral but there's a rattling under the car (coming from the front left) when i'm driving. The gear stick isn't floppy and gear changes are fine. Thinking about it, it's only started happening since I had it lowered 50mm but kept the standard shocks on. When I jack the front end up there is a little play in the left wheel though I had the nearside and offside driveshaft replaced last month. It's annoying the fuck out of me!

Same problem on mine. Haynes call it the Bellcrack Assembley ( the bit that's broke)

Think you would need to but a new unit as it's just a rubber ball which if you could get on by yourself it would probably fall off

my car is the same, brush is missing from the selector rod, makes it harder to get into reverse but it nothing major and is on my list to fix
