Help!! Gear linkage fowling exhaust

  1. #1
After fitting the smaller 2 rods i have now found that when attempting to pull back on the gear lever (as though i were changing into 2nd, 4th or rerverse) it fouls the main linkage on the exhaust downpipe flange! the downpipe almost seems to be slightly angled up which is making the exhaust a bitch to fit aswell? is there any way i can alter this? or is it possible that the gearbox mount or something is too tight or not tight enough therefore altering the pitch of the engine?

Got any pictures of the manifold -> exhaust joint under the car?

no sorry mate not at this moment in time, its where the front pipe joins the down pipe, the part that has the screws with springs etc etc

I know what you mean mate, I had a similar problem with my Piper exhaust - with the standard manifold, it used to catch the flange plate when selecting reverse. Swapped manifold to a Raceland and then it started catching in 2nd, 4th and reverse.

The garage ended up grinding the flange plate down a bit so it wouldn't catch, although they admitted they'd never seen it happen before. Still catches ever so slightly in reverse, but the gear goes in fine.

Have you got the flange plates angled correctly, i.e. passenger side of plates pointing towards the floor, and drivers side of plates pointing up at the car?

Actually... is your lower gearbox mount the right way around?

yes mate that how the flanges are angled, mine wont select 2nd 4th or reversand it is really annoying as the only thing i have done is put some new group n rods on and a taz quickshift..... so annoying.

to be fair mate i didnt actually fit that part back on my cousin did, i will check this asyou asre now the 2nd person to mention this, does anybody have a picture of the correct fitment for lower gearbox mount or a good explanation.

where should the big end be. facing forward/backward?

Hard to explain, but there's only two ways the lower gearbox mount can be fitted mate. If your cousin removed the mount to do the linkages and now you're struggling to select gears, I'd say it's the wrong way around.

Try removing the mount and fitting it the only other possible way it can go.
