side repeaters do you have to have them?

   well as above really i dont really like the look of them and my car is going in for a respray hopefully soon son i was wondering can i have them smoothed? will it still pass an mot etc?

   by law you do have to have them if the car was made after 1983 iirc, but like alot of things its down to the moter, on my old fiesta and golf i didn't have any and they passed mot's all the time
