Grinding noise - gearbox or driveshaft

    Hi guys,

Not been around here much lately.

Since I was last about my gti has started with a pretty bad vibration while driving. It feels like its coming from beneath the pedals/OS wheel, but I'm not really sure what is up.

I've jacked it up on both sides and wheel both front bearings seem solid enough (O/S one is about 6 months old). Doesn't seem to be coming from the back.

Could this be a drive shaft? There is a bit of play the O/S shaft between the gearbox and the wheel. It feels baggy and loose at the bearing carrier.

Or is my gear box knackered?

I'm not sure if it makes any difference but in neutral the noise/vibration is still the same. I can get all gears fine, no grinding. Not really sure if a gearbox would cause vibration if it was going.

    Thanks

    Balls.

I was hoping it was something else.

Would a knackered diff cause the whole car to wobble at speed? I can't feel any feedback through the stick?

    Cheers guys.

Just had the wheel off for a quick looksy, looks like the CV gaitor has split.

Will try replacing the nearside shaft first, before looking at the box
