Exhaust popping when i let off!

   I have just been to work in my new saxo. As I let off the accelerator the exhaust pops. I can live with it, but was wondering if anyone knows why this is happening? I assume this isnt supposed to happen...
   the car is a '98 VTR with no engine modifications whatsoever

   i was told the car was completely standard when i bought it.
   and they put a full years MOT on it... it wouldnt have passed this if it was a de-cat.
   any other ideas???

   its not a loud backfire, just a small popping, like you would expect from a tuned impreza. Its a nice sound, just dont feel this should be happening on a standard car.
   And it happens considerably more once the engine gets warmed up fully.

   over fueling would make it pop, usually happens when there is a cone filter on and decat, but with you not having these then it looks like it must be something else...sure it hasnt had a remap or chip, very hard to tell just by looking at it but lot of people got it done a while back keeping the standard look

   nah. i cant see any and the pressure at the tailpipe is quite good.
   maybe the cat, but surely this would have been at least an advisory on the MOT, if not a fail.

    sounds like no cat,guy who sold it to you might have had a mate who was an mot tester who passed it with no cat on for him.

    Trust me, tuned Impreza's don't do a small popping lol. And nor does your car sound like an Impreza
    
    Tbf could be blowing slightly or something. Heard plenty of car's do it when they're blowing a little.
    
    Scrap the exhaust and get a Magnex or something lol.

    May sound like an impreza if running on three cylinders..
    
    I would go with the cat being duffed, or you having a 2" race exhaust and not knowing the difference

    i always thought they were meant to pop when you let off if they were aftermarket decat lol shows how much i know
    i can make mine pop everytime i change gear

    i honestly would complain, i love the sound of the popping, and can say its most people's dream, but if car standard it means there is a hole and oxygen is mixing with the emmisons check the manifold bolts are tight and not leaking.

    maybe get a picture of the exhaust from the back and right along to the manifold

    Sorry to unquote myself, but, while having a nosey under the bonnet at work today, it appears the car may not be completely standard...
    it has had an induction kit fitted at some point (but now removed, probably just before it was sold... the breather pipe has a brand new filter fitter)
    and the exhaust does look relatively new.(it is a lot more shiny than the rest of the underside!)
    I will get a pic up tomorrow when there is some daylight.

    check the rubber hanger in the middle to see if broken or missing.

    Standard vtr exhaust mate, cant see in front of that from the pics though. Should have taken some from the mani back as well.

    Looks standard, and i wouldnt worry bout the popping, people say mine pops really loud for a 8v. kinda funny through smalls towns tho

    Enjoy the sound, on my vts i fitted 4-1.. race tube.. straight through back box to get the popping and fizzing sound...... down side gone deaf .

    so we now know this IS a standard exhaust. so this is not the cause of the popping...
    
    is there any other things i can check?

    Tbh.... id love the rally pop :/ my dads old Suzuki bandit 1200 motorbike, straight through Micron can, sounded luuush, used to be on the back with the visor up just to listen to it pop and bang

    it seems to be fixing itself
    it has now turned into a blowing noise, like there is a hole in the exhaust somewhere. although there is no hole...
    and it seems to be getting quieter the more i drive it, done like 150miles since i got it.
    
    could it be caused by the fact it was in the car lot for about a year, without being properly driven???
