Intermittent starting & High Revs

   My VTR will occasionally rev on its own whilst idling and when driving. Sometimes it's a bastard to start as well but does eventually start. Loads of life in the battery. It also emits black smoke from the exhaust when starting sometimes. Is this a ICV problem or a fuel pump problem or could it be both? Just changed the air, oil and fuel filters last month. Cheers for any help.

   have you cleaned the ICV?

   Yes I did mate. Took it off and gave it a good clean. Didn't make any difference.

   your problem with the idling is caused by the ICV, so would need replacing, get one off ebay cos shops will charge you about 90quid, got one off ebay for 25quid (make sure you get the same model number as your existing one) , solved my problems similar to yours. but it shouldnt have anything to do with it starting up, as you can start them up without them in, this may be the starter motor, check that as the seize up. and the black smoke, probly means theres oil mixing with the emmisions, so check all gaskets and leaks.
