Gear box please help

   HI i have a major problem i think i need some advice before i waste any money .
   
   There is a rattling sound from gear box engine area but when i put my clutch in it quietens it down and when im driving it gets more quiet . But it really does not sound good

   i suspect its you clutch release bearing if noise stops when yo press clutch pedal
   its almost certainly that
   if so will require a new and best to do clutch at same time

   Will be pretty expensive, isn't the bearing for the clutch something stupid like a couple of quid?

   That is your gearbox gone mate. If it was the clutch release bearing the noise would come on when you pressed in your clucth

   yeah i have heard both storys if the noise stops when you press it in the clutch release bearing has gone and if you press it in and the noise appars then its the release bearing who to beleave

   it could just as easily be the bearing on the input shaft of the gearbox, i had it once.

    Mate just have the same problem.. the gearbox has gone you must have a whole somewhere and oil leaked out as you have no oil, it will be making a noice coz its strugling to work, or use what is left.. This possibly could mean oil has leaked onto the clucth, which mine did.. and its the relase bearings.. put foot on clucth nothing, take it off makes a noise.. If you need a new clutch google euro parts. type reg, and clucth, then gives you clucthes get a valeo.. one of the best mid range around ( 80 quid).. Also for a gearbox get quotes or get from scrappy. Hope this helps mate

    Thanks for your help everyone . A guy on my street says its my gearbox and the noise can be heard while im driving now and not just when the clutch is down . He reckons he can get me one for 70 quid and said he can fit it but not gave me price yet . My car is a S reg it has done 150000 miles but is in immaculate condition . DO you think its worth it for miles and age

    box for a 1.1 can be had for less than £70, ive seen them for £40ish on here. dependin on where you live theres plenty of people who can fit them for cheap
