leaking oil and notchy gearbox

  1. #1
    hi guys and girls

just registered to the site, brilliant website and i have already found loads of useful things

two questions to start and any answers would be appreciated.

i have had my saxo exclusive 1.4 for about 4months.

i have noticed an oil leak and i had the rubber seal around the top of the rocker box replaced. this seemed to fix the problem but now the leak has started again. i looked yesterday and it looks as though the seal that was replaced has started buckling/bending outwards away from the back of the box which looks like where the oil is coming from. any suggestions why this would be happening?

also, my gearbox seems only what i can describe as "notchy" especially going from 1st to 2nd. sometimes its fine but other times its a right pain to get into 2nd. i either have to change it slowly or if i do it fast i can hear a big clunk, which doesnt sound good.

i have booked it into the garage for next week and was wondering if anyone could think what might be wrong with it and suggest how much parts may cost, as i appreciate that labour costs vary from place to place.

    many thanks guys

Check the metal baffle plate under the rocker cover isn`t bent mine was & the seal wasn`t sitting flush with the head causing a leak.

Gearbox could be a variety of things (I have same problem even though I've replaced clutch). Common problems are worn thrust bearing, linkages or there's a rubber ball that can come off the end of the linkage arm apparantly. Obviously it could also just be a worn/knackered box which there isn't much you can do about :o(

Out of interest how much did it set you back to have the engine seal replaced?

    Hi and welcome,

The notchy gear change can be a worn synchro - really expensive from Citroen and a secondhand or reconditioned one may be a more cost effective option. It could be the gearbox is low on oil and damage has happened.

As Russel says, if you are lucky it can be the linkages but this usually causes the gear stick to feel loose and move around alot, but it is a common problem.

it cost me only like a fivver for the new seal around the rocker head but it looks for some reason like it is causing the leak again, a bit strange after only about 2 months.
