Gearbox knocking and whining

   My gearbox knocks when changing through the lower gears and whines until I push the clutch in. I know it is on its way out but what I'd like to know is what actually causes the knocking and what causes the whining noise? Anyone know? Cheers!

   Anyone know if a MK2 gearbox will fit on a MK1????
