hia guys i put an engine in for me friend the other day, it came straight out of one gti and was fine then into his gti, start up and runs fine but when i put my foot on the clutch you get a very scraping sound, you can here it without touching the clutch but alot more when you put your foot down, i took the driver side shaft out yestday as that was dodgy but it still does it, it has oil in it...........
i havnt been back down there yet but i have just thought while typing this out that maybe its the flywheel cover bent under the gearbox?? i will go check that when i go to the garage but any other idea's to check if its not this?.....

    thanks,ad

how longs it been making the noise?

mine was making a scrapping noise for about 1 week, and was told it was clutch release bearing, then few days later the clutch went

it never did it before, i took the engine out of one car and put it in another then it started to do it, i didnt take the gearbox off or anything like that, i dont understand why it would do this......

could either be clutch release bearing or the input shaft bearing on the gearbox, as it is when you press the clutch id suggest release bearing

lew_c where are they located in the gearbox? i went and tried a couple of things today and its not as bad now but i need to sort this, i just dont understand how this can just go from swaping the engine from one car to another

Sounds like the clutch release bearing, might also be worth replacing the gear oil / checking the gear oil level.

    Hi,

Release bearing in transmission/gearbox bell housing (where clutch is): http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=314531

Input Shaft bearing is inside your gearbox: http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=262827 see step 8)

I agree with the above posts, relesae bearing seems likely. Any chance someone used the clutch release lever as a handle to install the engine+gearbox into the car?

bob raises a great point here. many people use the release lever to pull on for installing the gearbox which in turn damages it

Yeah Very good point if this has been done it will damage the release bearing easily its happend to me before.

thanks very much for that reply mate i dont think i did use that when lifting it but i will take the box off this weekend and change the bearing

thanks very much for that reply

thought it makes this noise, he wanted to take it away as it is, the car goes into gears fine when not running then when started and running it willl not go into gear....
