What is the best cheap run around???

   Hi guys,
   
   Going to be starting a new job soon that requires a bit of travelling around. I was wondering what do you think would be the best cheap run around car.
   
   E.g. Best mpg, comfortable etc.....
   
   Got about £1000 to spend

   306 or 406 diesel, Hdi should be well in that price range

   I'd be looking towards small engined diesels, pugs, fords etc,

   id have thought a diesel would be good like a bmw 3 series, peugeot 406 hdi, peugeot 106 or saxo 1.5d and a ford mondeo
