it depends on how low you go mate if you go 30mm it will be fine mine is 40mm front still on standards and thier still good but reccomended to get them as it will ruin other parts as the bumps will be to hard how low are you going ?
  3. #3
    I was thinking 35mm
  4. #4
35mm will be fine with standard shocks and dampers. If you want to go any lower than 40mm then you definately want to get an uprated kit.
  5. #5
As said above, though its always better to treat the car to some nice stiffer shocks anyway
  6. #6
luck has a good bit to play in it I was down 60mm for 2 years on standard shocks with no problems. The shocks were in fine condition when I changed to the apex kit.
  7. #7
It'd be silly not to upgrade the shocks as you will of had to disassemble the front struts anyway so chucking new shocks in wouldn't be an extra effort, and the rear ones are easy to do so silly not change them really, cost isn't really with the budget kits out there, get an apex and pay someone to fit it and do the torsion bar and you'll of only £300 and it will outlast and out preform your standard shocks 10 times over

GMAX is awful mate. Go for a spax vsx or apex kit, they are good budget kits.
  10. #10
    or this kit?

i went down 60mm and only changed springs.. i soon regretted it and fitted apex dampers, the car used to bottom out on oem shocks resulting in my front bumper smacking on the deck
  16. #16
Doubt I would ever go as low as 60mm to be honest, to many speed bumps everywhere where I live. I think 40mm would be my absolute max.
  17. #17
either way mate id buy dampers, even if you only buy front dampers for the sake of £110 you can have apex dampers and they get very good reviews and all my mates have said how much better my car rides with them on
  18. #18
Yea think I'm gonna just get thisand get the lot done:

    i did shocks and springs
50mm down using a apex kit from kam racing
    love it
  20. #20
I went down 60mm on standard shocks, They did not last long and blew, resulting in it sitting 10mm lower and smashing my gerabox on the floor.
  21. #21
standard shocks on 60mm springs last about a week, two if you drive like betty from the bingo hall
  22. #22
35mm is the lowest ide go on standard shocks any lower uprated are advisable as when the car is lifted off the ground you can move the spring around due to the lenth difference which is also mot faliure

Mines lasted 2 years and were still invoke condition when they got swapped for apex ones. Everybody scaremongers about shocks getting fucked in a week after getting lowered imo
  24. #24
If your car has a bouncy bumpy ride, would fitting updated shocks improve the ride,? Mine was already lowered I think only springs.
  25. #25
If it's bouncing around I'd change te shocks as it sounds knackered. Tbh I'd change the shocks everytime when lowering as it just makes sense. If you end up changing it back, you have the shocks!
  26. #26
i lowered mine just springs and felt fine 40mm,year later upgraded to apex kit from kamracing my god did i feel the differance well better with full kit.
  27. #27
homemade coilis ftw, with billy b8s
  28. #28
What difference do you usually feel from standard and uprated shocks

stiffer more resposive feel to the car.think of 1.4 astra to a vxr a bit over the top but you get what i mean.
the lads on here with track cars could explain better a standard vts around a track is good same car uprated suspension is better it makes the car feel and handle better.
  31. #31
i have eibach springs and it blew my front to shock absorbers so had to buy some new ones and same with the back dampers your better of changing everything tbf mate
  32. #32
Hi guys.. I am brand new... actually bought a Saxo 1.1 4dr Desire today and it is bog standard.... i need to do something about that... would these kits/shocks work ok or ar these VTS/VTR only?
  33. #33
they should fit but will not be lowered as much due to the 1.1 weighing less.

check apex, spax etc for kits specific to the 1.1
  34. #34
didnt when i was 35mm at the front on eibach springs, as they have the same spring rate or something to standards to felt quite comfy. after a year and a half the dampers were pretty knackered though. wouldnt go lower than 40mm on standard dampers tbh
  35. #35
if your gonna change suspension go all the way. if you cant afford save up and do it all in one go. i wouldnt change to lower springs without changing dampers personally
  36. #36
    thanks stupotvtr.

another question i've been looking around but anyone know any good places online to buy spax/apex suspension kits. I'm looking for the whole set really... springs and dampers
  37. #37
I havent uprated, at a 35mm drop, pretty stable atm
  38. #38
kamracing was cheapest i found for spax
  39. #39
i got mine off ebay shocks and springs for 140 that was adjustable ones
  40. #40
motorsportworld are a good company, that would lower your car about 40mm I think.

    http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/det...-40&PID=436406

    and also check

    www.kamracing.co.uk

They have kits specific for 1.1's
  41. #41
Down -45/50mm standard shocks on GTi, bumpy ride that's why I've got Gaz coilovers in garage waiting to go on would be fine for a weekend but a daily with potholes it's a pain..
  42. #42
i ran a 60mm drop all round on standerd dampers and they were fine
  43. #43
mines down 50-60 and still using standard shocks and dampers and its been lowered year and half had no problems yet
