Advice needed

    Hi all,

to make things quick i had a water leak from under the bonnet. my car konked out on me half way up a hill, smoke the lot.

i took it to my local garage and they said that my radiator had gone and i needed a new one. i asked if there was any other damage to my car as i thought the head gasket might of went aswell, they said the gasket looks at the moment like its on its way out but if i place a new radiator in it it might improve and the gasket 'MIGHT' not go but it could go tomorrow or even in like 6 months. He said it is a gamble to take and hope that the gasket doesnt go.

Previous to this my car has been seriously overheating, within 10 minutes of driving the fan comes on and when i turn the engine off when i have stopped driving, the fan continues to run.

I need some advice as to whether i should go ahead with paying out 140 for a new radiator and installation and hope for the best, or not even bother

Anybody else had anything like this before?

How did they check the headgasket?? surly he put a breather in the expansion tank which would give yo ua yes/no answer to the gasket failing?

Ive cooked cars in the past and theyve been ok but i always cooked a rover i owned and that was foooooked the head was like a bananna when i took it off

ahh not too sure, he said he pressure tested it for the water leak, but he said that oil was leaking through the gasket or something into the water
(sorry dont really know much about engines)

If oils leaking in the water then your headgasket is gone surly? unless its "going" opposed to "gone" which is that sthe case change the fluid and sell it
