clunk when turning steering wheel???

when the car is stationary and i turn the steering wheel i hear a clunk noise..its loud and sumtimes does it whe i drop off a curb..lowered 50mm saxo VTS

anyone had the same problem?any answers would be great..i know its not drive shaftor drop links cos they are new..could it be anti roll bar or steering rack??

I have this exact problem.

I can't find the fault and have had my car in at two reputable garages that have stripped everything off the car and they can't find the fault either.

We have checked track rods, drive shafts, lower arms, top mounts, drop links and no joy.

Mines been though two mot's like this.

Are you lowered on standard shocks ?

my anti toll bar was loose before and hadit tightened..it stopped for a bit but its back now..anti roll bar is still tight as hell tho

Pretty sure this is a damaged steering rack, if so it will knock if your stationary and rock the wheel from left to right.

Its wear in the actual rack and pinion.

would it help if i said iv had my wheels balanced and had wheel allignement but still pulls to the left when i accelarate...?

Anti roll bar but 90% sure it will be track rod end. Mine did it and i changed a knackered track rod end, Job was a good one

Hi I have the same problem with my MK2 saxo vtr and have been trying to fix it since I've had the car. It doesn't do it all the time but does do it frequently and sometimes sounds very loud. I'm a mechanic and have replaced bottom arms, strut top bearings, drop links and tried every tip and trick you can find but its still there. But recently my power steering has stopped working and it has become worse, as a result Im 99% sure its the rack thats causing the noise. So now Im going to be fitting a power steering pump and then a rack to hopefully cure the knock.

Mine does this, garage informed me it's the spring not seated completely correctly.

Try putting some grease on the plates at the ends of the springs. Its sounds to me like the spring is sticking then going 'twang' when the wheels are turned

how easy/expensive is it to change steering rack and pinion?

my car has done this ever since ive lowered it. Have new droplinks, wishbones, springs dampers, passed an mot and my mate at the garage didnt even no what it was. I thought it could be top mounts but steering rack sounds more like it tbh

Mine does this.... Iv spoken to my bro whos a mechanic and he said its nothing to worry about its just the ball joint worn all though it has no play in it. Mines a furio 16v but with the same suspension setup.

I changed everything on my saxo - ball joints, track rod ends, drop-links and driveshafts and after everything it still had a really horrible knock.

It was like a knuckle knocking noise that you could click side to side with the steering wheel and I thought it was my steering rack like an above poster suggested. In the end I realised I'd overlooked the top mounts because you would never expect the lumps of rubber or even the bearing to make that kind of noise, but I was running out of ideas so changed them anyway and finally!!! Problem solved!

Its so nice to finally have a saxo that doesn't knock pretty much every Saxo or 106 ive ever been in has had knocking suspension lol.

So yeah I would suggest checking the top mounts coz you'd be suprised what a horrible dirty knocking noise they can create.

Im going to check mine aswell. Mine only seems to do it when i full lock either left or right and its like a rubbing noise? Just changed wishbones but no joy so far.

im gettin the same with mine only it happens wen im turnin the wheel when the saxo is stationary! nothing makes a noise wen i come off the curbs! the problem with mine is in the shock mounting! worth a try havin a look!

Which part did you inspect just the rubber mounting? Becuse that will rarely show signs of wear.

Its the thin metal bearing that goes between the rubber top mount and the spring pan so the strut can rotate at the top of the car.

When the bearing wears and sticks the spring will move about in the cup making the knocking noise, they make the knock from the amount of compression within them and the force created when it flexes

and you should know, mine didn't even looked damaged but after changing them anyway no more clicky/side to side knock noises from my steering rack.

I wish i knew now to actually replace this part.

Had that annoying ka-plunk noise whenever i full lock either way as well lol.
