how often do you replace plugs, airfilter and fuel filter?

according to haynes manual, servicable parts like airfilter, spark plugs, fuel filter etc. it says to replace every 36000 miles. Does that sound like the right time to replace them 3 parts or is that quite a long while? because thats about 3 years lol

how often should you replace them?

also says oil and oil filter to be changed every 9000 miles which sounds about right tbh

    No it doesn't.

Can you imagine the state of an airfilter after 36k?

I change everything every 10k apart from oil/filter that i do every 5k.

30-40k is fine for them parts. Depending on the time scale as well. Only reason you'd need to change them sooner is if you were having problems or the environment your driving in.

Contaminated fuel = new fuel filter. Really dusty, shitty environment = check air filter. Misfiring, other common problems = check spark plugs.

If you want to change them sooner then go ahead, it won't do any harm, but they will last that long.

The most important part of a service is the oil and filter change, this will also be the main contributory factor to the life of your engine. So do that as you please.

    I agree.

I live near and spend alot of time in leeds city centre and other mainly built up area's and my air filter used to be filthy after 10k.

If you are lucky enough to live in the open country i'm sure it would last alot longer.

It doesn't take much to confuse you does it lad.

I simply meant 36k would be too much for the conditions my vehicle is driven in or probably most vehicles for that matter however....

I do agree with Mr_P that it is driving condition dependant and there is not one set rule for all cars and drivers.

I wasn't agreeing with the fact 30-40k is fine.

I was agreeing with the fact it's condition dependant.

Hence the below which was written in the same post.

I service mine every year, so around 10-12k. Spark plugs and fuel filter less frequently tho.
  12. #12
I do my plugs, oil & filter every 2.5k
  13. #13
for the price of plugs, and filters just change them every 10k along with an oil change, best to use an engine flush before draining the oil and best to drain when its hot as its thinner and youll get more out

How many of you have stopped using garages for the service history, i've recently carried out a service to my Saxo myself, engine flush, Oil and filter, plugs, air filter and fuel filter as well as checking coolant levels and power steering fluid. Im now beginning to feel that i wont bother sending my car to the garage for its regular service intervals, instead i'm just marking the service book when i've carried out a service and attaching receipts for the parts.
My only worry is when i come to sell it, it may put people off ? I just cant bare to pay a garage money to do something i can do myself anymore, if the car was worth thousands then id keep it up for resale value but as it is a 53 VTR with 53k on will go for what £2300 at best ?
Im planning on keeping it for 2-3 more years to so that will drop again, im thinking ill send it for a pre-MOT inspection at my mates garage prior to the MOT for a general check over.
What do the rest of you do servicing wise ?

I'd say there's no point in changing plugs etc after 2500 miles.thats just crazy.there cant any shit,burning/eroding,etc on plugs after 2500miles.thats just spending money unnecessarily.
  16. #16
plugs should last at least 30 - 40k anyway
  17. #17
Its all cheap enough these days, i used to just change my oil and oil filter ever 3k but now i do the lot at that point... Takes me a while to do that anyway lol.

whats flushing the engine consist of?

You can get it from any motor parts shop, it's just a de-greasing agent designed to remove any built up deposits.
When changing the oil get the car up to temp them pour the can into the oil filler, rev at 1.5 a 2k revs for 10 mins then carry out your oil change as normal.
It just help remove any sludge like deposits.
