News : Hammerite Underbody Seal Questions

  1. #1
Im looking to underseal my car next week using this stuff :
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165594

Plan is to get the car on axle stands get underneath, scrape any rust off with wire brush, wash over and clean, then paint on the underseal.

Is this stuff any good ? Im reading mixed reviews, some people say its good stuff others say its crap, falls off easily and doesnt really protect.

Also as its highly flamable im having some welding done on the car in a couple weeks, having a new exhaust hanger welded to the car with a metal plate welded on before. This will be at least a week after the underseal has been put on so will it be ok to weld ?

i used some a while back, wire brushed all surface rust off first it was solid, checked under car other day, peeled a bit off and a layer of rust came off with it. so gonna get some rust remover on it first rust primer stuff paint maybe then underseal. saxos just seem to wanna rot, underbody anyway.

3 months is that it ? it says you can apply to rust surfaces though ?
fuck that then ill look for something else

think ya need to kill the rust first prob work fine if treated it first. think it might have trapped in some moister.

not bad stuff if done correctly. you can paint direct to rust as long as theres no way moisture or water can get in the rust wont grow... but tbh kill it first with kurust

can you just sand the rust off first ?

wire brush if your doing it that way... just be careful...

Ive just started doing my civic with this stuff. It wierd and it takes ages to paint on but it seems to work. Havnt got any long term advice but i payed £5 so im not complaining

So wire brush it clean and apply a good coat of that stuff and it should last a good while ?

Also, as its highly flamable, would a week + be long enough to wait before getting some welding done ?

Sack off the idea off the brush on stuff. It's a pain in the arse.

I've just done my car with the spray on stuff.

The liquid in the paint is flamable so after it dries it shouldnt ignite. Wire brush, 40 grit sand paper, dry brush in that order to prepare the surface. Then just paint on over everything non mechanical or electrical. Its hammerite so it should last years if done correctly

Yeah the paint on stuff will be harder than a simple spary but i dont have a spary gun, so the paint on method is cheaper, im not too fussed about extra work.

Can you not paint it over mechanical parts such as wishbones, axles etc ?

Schutz guns only cost about £15

So can you apply it to the mechanical parts such as the wishbones, axles, suspension arms etc ??

As long as it isnt on the bushes or greased up parts, springs, exaust ect it should be fine. When you have a good look under the car you will see straight away the kind of areas which are just shouting out to be painted.
