Dodgy Petrol

  1. #1
A friendly mechanic has offered me 40 litres of petrol for nothing... only catch is that it has been filtered out of a diesel car after the owner filled up with the wrong sauce. the guy believes the petrol to be a 3% diesel mix, and says it will be ok to run on an older management system like that of a saxo.

    what do you reckon?
  2. #2
if he will drain it out if it all goes tits up the why not
  3. #3
hmm do a lot of miles in my car, could do with saving some money but dont want to do any lasting damage. I heard that the consequences of diesel in a petrol is worse than the other way round

would u but 3% diesel in your car at the pumps? your car mate me not a friggin chance even if its free.
sounds like hes just trying to get rid.

worse comes to the worst you can put a vts engine in instead haha

deisel ignites by preignition so the pistons will compress too early (before the spark plug ignites) causing clunking. (A level chemistry is useful people) in theory it ill just burn though but your engine wont like it. get the fuel put a bit in and see what happens.

dont forget that he has an oil disposal unit at his garage that he could quite easily chuck the petty into if he wanted to, i have half a tank of clean petrol, maybe i could add some to it?

seriously mate i wouldnt chance it you wont be saving money if your engine goes pop.

lol, i heard that diesel waxes up when cold, maybe i could just whack it in my freezer and see if it separates
  10. #10
you might not have got what i said because we posted in the same minute
  11. #11
about adding it to the clean petrol a bit at a time? i saw that. im posting quick because i think he'll have it himself, tbh always better safe than sorry so im thinking of leaving him to it

    petrol in petrol engines

    end of.

alright boss! the way i see it now is that if it were safe to use he'd take it with him as i know hes got a couple of older petrols in his yard and at home. thanks for the quick replies

Go for it, can't be much worse than Tescos
  15. #15

that would be daft-and all to save a few bob.isn't that the way it normally is-when someone gets the offer of something for nothing, there's usually a horrible price to pay.!

modern diesle contains anti waxing agents, has done since like the late 80s i was told on my hgv course. unless you proper freeze it.

i would keep it anyway, useful for running your dads lawn mower on if nowt else,

diesel would make it a bit smoky, but not too bad on a 3% mix.

Personally, I would fill up with half a tank of petrol, then put in a quarter of this concoction until its all gone, but then again, it won't be my engine going bang if anything happens

duno about running diesel in with petrol i run alot of redex with mine says to add half to a full tank i add like neally half to a tenner lool
seems to work but for the first couple miles it kinda stalls when you stop

but to answer your question i wouldnt risk it stick with what you get from the pumps

i second what meto says diesel will lower the octane of the fuel could cause knocking i would blend it more so there is less diesel in it
