ARB end plate bolt knackard

  1. #1
Righty, a while back one of my ARB end plate bolts basically killed the thread in the arm, At this point i got it tapped out to m10 and all was fine, recently i have found that once again the thread in the arm has been killed so now my ARB is plinking like a bitch!

    What are my options?

any idea as to why the thread keeps screwing up? seems strange as if it was drilled and tapped out it should have been stronger then orig thread
  3. #3
I think this it may have been a cross threading issue
  4. #4
    helicoil it?
  5. #5
helicoil or drill a new thread further up the plate and tap that.
  6. #6
    M12 thread + Loctite??
  7. #7
Helicoil existing hole then add a second bolt with helicoil for extra security

helicoil is a dodge thing in my experience. i would look for a less gash solution, unless you are at m12 already

Try time-sert if helicoil is a bodge...

A less gash solution? Are you calling the areospace and motor sport industry gash? As it is standard practise in both of these industrys to use helicoils, especially when using a high tensile steel, or titanium bolt into an aluminium thread on a structural joint.

This is because the helicoil spreads the tensile force of the bolt across all threads, where as a tapped hole, the force is generally concentrated in the top 2-3 threads.

+1. Helicoil is a standard thing in aerospace industry, many aluminium components have threaded inserts fitted. worst that can happen if an ARB bolt falls out is a bit of noise, its a bit more critical if a hydraulic pump on a 747 fails

Cheers guys, will have a go at one of these

maybe gash was the wrong word, in the aircraft trade we dont like them, if you ever end up having to remove the plate, you may find yourself repalcing it again.
