Over heating- start failure

   Hey guys,
   
   When drivving my VTR the temperature sencor doesn't move and then it might go up a bit during the journey and then all of a sudden bam the red light will flash up... if i turn the engine off and try to re-start my engine, it doesn't start... this is really anoying me, any ideas of what i should do? I'm a car novice, so any help would be mint,

   get a compression and 'sniff' test done by a garage
