Exhaust query

My car failed its MOT on a few bits and bobs but one on the exhaust system emission test. I belive the exhaust is a saxsport exhaust system and ive heard they do "Dummy catalyic convertors" on their systems. ive taken a photo and just wonderd if any body as any idea as to if this is a "Dummy Cat" or not? If so im thinking il just buy a cheapo exhaust system of a standard vts for the retest? Cheers

Also sorry if the photo is abit pants and doesnt help in anyway. let me know if more pics would help and i shall upload some

From the Picture that does look like its been decatted, but ideally, a picture of the system slightly more towards the front would be better as the cat sits just infront of that centre pipe, and from that picture its slightly difficult to see.

Hmm okay so if i lay down directly behind the car and get a picture thatl help? Im not actually sure if its been decatted, as the guy said it was jumping up and down sometimes it passed then was failing. if theres any boffins on here i could post the exact readouts and maybe that would help even further?

Basically, from the front to back it should go:

    Front pipe from the engine
Catalytic Converter (From what i understand on some VTR's this is built into the front pipe, but VTS's have them as a seperate section)
    Exhaust Centre pipe
    Back box

If the system goes straight from Front pipe to the exhaust Centre section, then you are probably missing the catalytic converter. The standard ones are slightly wider and shorter than the centre section dummy silencer on those systems from what I remember.

the cat is obvious to see mate big bulging box on the downpipe

It does exactly what you say from the front pipe backwards. But as you say the standard ones are slightly wider... whereas this system is more of a beefed up center section being fatter... if that makes any sense lol. I was going to take the center section off because, i was going to see if its possible to see the honeycomb shapes that are inside the catalytic convertors but the pipe is far to long to see inside.

ive heard you can get a free emissions test at any MOT garage im not sure if this is true? i did have an exhaust leak but this was sorted this morning so i want to see if this has made any difference what so ever

If it is a saxsport exhaust, that section on the centre pipe is not a catalytic converter from what I'm aware of, I've got a decatted saxsport on mine and it looks exactly the same as that centre section you put a pic of.

Could i just get a normal cat from a standard vts exhaust or would it not fit the rest of the exhaust sections?
  11. #11
To make a cat fit a decatted system would mean you'd have to start cutting the centre section to make it fit. Personally it'd be easier to keep a standard exhaust system spare and just swap them over for MOT's like I am gonna be doing.

ahh in that case il just have to do that . will a vtr system fit or am i gonna have to find a vts one? maybe thats a silly suggeston im not sure. its just ive been to a few scrapyards latley and they only havre vtr's ?

both VTS and VTR will fit

the saxsport dummy cat is just a de-cat. unless you get the saxsport race cat which is alot of money just get a spare exhaust.

Im after a spare exhaust phones around all the scrapyards and motor factors want 240pound for a full vts system! Are the vtr and vts systems definaltey the same i thought the cat on the vtr was on the manifold in which case itd be different?
