Important! : mystery problems

My vtr 1999 phase 2 recently broke down.
I thought it was because of a old battery that kept going flat and bad earths as it misfired badly and i only just got it home.
It wasnt firing proppaly and the rev counter started going crazy, backwards ect.
I had to keep popping it out of gear and reving the nuts off it to prevent it cutting out.
i have fitted new battery with gold terminals and all new earths.
    new coil pack
when i took the plugs out as i had no spark there was a coating of oil around thread.i have fitted new plugs
    new relay for injectors(under ecu)
There is NO imobiliser light on the dash and the ecu has been running the car without a pick up ring for a year.so bellieve its unlocked
    The diognostic light stays on.
its a single plug bosh standard ecu.
I have fuel but no spark.
Now when i click to second position on ignition it sounds like the power is now going to the power steering pump!!!!
Has anyone had an ecu go or simular problems or suggestions VERY welcome.
Its been off the road far to long now.
    HELP!thanks peeps,Gaz.

if theres oil around the spark plugs it could indicate worn bores/ piston rings or valve guides, according to the good old haynes manual. I dont know if that helps in any way mate.

Are you sure thats not just the fuel pump priming?

    Thanks guys,
new fuel pump and fully adjustable regulator under bonnet running at 4 bar(3.5 standard)
I dont think the oil round plugs is why it wont spark as diagnostic light on.
there is a fuel release valve in engine bay and i defo have fuel.
Took coilpack off turned it upside down and earthed and no spark.

Are you sure its oil round the spark plugs?

If so, as someone said above, it might indicate that oil is getting into the combustion chambers coating the sparkies and preventing them firing.

If thats the case, it might be fried piston rings

Do you get thick black smoke out of the exhaust when it does start?

    no smoke,and am not 100%.
The car didnt smoke even when you floored it.
i did try to light the substance with a lighter and it never took.
on a plug taken from car lol

If it was the piston rings is that just a top end rebuild or does it depend on how much damage done, you wont know till you look????

Pistons are in the block mate, head should be fine

If the rings are fried (which they mite not be) then it may have fooked the bottom end.
Im not a mechanic thou so someone else may be better placed to advise

It was more like an ellectrical misfire as i didnt notice any smoke.
Allso the rev counter went crazy.
I think the ecu has gone as its sending power to power steering pump instead of starter now.
