Vtr or vts?? Help needed to decide

  1. #1
Hi all i am going to take my vtr off the road soon and do some work on the engine as needs a gearbox aswell. I was wondering is it worth me putting big end bearings new head gasket etc or shall i just buy a vts with lower mileage on. Really cant make up my mind love the look of the vts engine but have done so much to my vtrs exterior and interior so dont want to change cars just wondered what everyone else would do cheers

VTS pwns VTR.... simple as that. Way more fun to drive.
  3. #3
if you want to keep your vtr because you like the way it looks and you want a vts engine then just do an engine swap..... seams like a no brainer lol

How much hassle is it to swap the engines is it just the loom ecu and engine oe do i need new mounts aswell or anything else for that matter?
  5. #5
    the very BASIC things are
    -engine
    -loom
    -ecu
    -top rad hose

the vtr gearbox, rad, fan and mounts are fine

and if you have some spare money i'd do it properly and fit the following
    -vts rad and fan
-bottom rad hose (or just simply cut the vtr hose down by a couple inches)
-new cambelt kit including the water pump and aux belt
-give the engine a good service (filters and fluids)

and if you really wanna go a bit more "all out"
-reconditioned gearbox (vts for good mpg, or a rallye/xsi/1.1 box for good acceleration but crap mpg and lower top end)
    -new drive shafts

After driving both, VTS is definitely my choice, but it does also drink more petrol

id love a vts engine in my vtr but having the time and funds to do it is a pain , would miss the low end power from the vtr tho, dont the vts have a shite low end ?

Nope, S has more torque & a closer gearbox with a higher rev limit!

Scratch the 1.1 box out of there mate, i have one fitted to my S and still manage to get mine off the clock, i estimate about 145 before its had it, the mpg isnt too bad either, sits around 3250 at 70mph, they like a drink anyways so you wont notice it at the pumps.

    TU5J4 all the way!!

vts all the way. had both and vts out does vtr by miles and will put a smile on your face a a big frown on the driver of the car that tries it. 16v all the way

im stuck as to do the swap too, got a bare engine and want to start buying parts but due to work cant afford to have my car off the road for more than a weekend and would struggle to do it myself

The VTS feels like absolutely fuck all until you are above 4,000-4,500 rpm. As peak torque is at something like 5,200 rpm. Whereas in the R it's at around 3,000. So there is a huge difference in feel when low down.

My rallye has a lot more torque low down in the range than my S did. So when you're driving you don't have to rev the tits off the 8 valve to have a bit of a play. But the 16v still wins hands down.

lol... i had my vts at about 120 and the pistons were pretty much dancing on the bonnet, no way have you got 145 from a 1.1 box lol even a vts with a vtr box wouldnt do 145
  15. #15
The 5th gear on the 1.1 box is longer than the VTS anyway. Or at least the "common" 1.1 box. Apparently there are others with different final drives but I know nothing of them.
  16. #16
well in 5th doing 70mph my vts with a 1.1 box was showing 4k rpm, and now with my vtr box at 70mph i sit at 3krpm, so thats a difference of 1k rpm so my 1.1 final drive must have been shorter
  17. #17
The VTR and 1.1 box gear ratios are pretty much identical! It's not worth arguing over the difference. The final drives are totally different though.

1.1 box on 195/45/15 with a 7250 limit will do 144.4 at the limit in fifth. The VTR box will do 163.6. All in theory of course.

Dies the vts cost a lot more than the vtr to insure ? Just curious

if u dont know what ur doing dont do the engine change or get some one to do it for u but dont think that will be cheap i started a westy 16v and in the end called it a day and went and brought a vts or get a vts the same colour and just swap everything easy as that

i should imagine that the VTS is much more on insurance than the VTR seeing as though the VTS group is like 14? and the VTR is group 8? (i dont know if this is right but near enough )
  26. #26
Do you want go pay 220 for a years tax or for 6 months that's the question ?

Get a vts much more fun to drive. insurance for me was about £150 difference between a vtr and a vts

vtr is slow and your get bored quickly if your looking for a fast car. dont waste your time tuning a vtr when you get better gains from tuning a vts. the vts is more exspecive then a 106 gti when it comes to insurance but power is the same. if you want a slow car with huge ugly bodykit then get a vtr or furio because once you have told your insurance about the mods and half a disco in the boot it costs alot.
