What would cause an engine to stop turning suddenly!?

  1. #1
Ok so my flywheel tries to spin when i turn the ignition to ON, but it seems as though it just gets stuck, I think my car is stuck in gear, all linkages are back on i can move the gearstick backwards and forwards but no other direction, Anyone know why my flywheel cannot operate or why it would get stuck in gear? had my engine out put box back on with new clutch and thrust bearing and now its just jammed, starter gets hot because its trying its best to turn over my car!

    bumpy....

not sure if its the same problem i had, this might sound stupid but put it into gear, like gear 3 or something then rock the car back a forth a bit, take it out of gear and try start it.
  4. #4
I think you could well be right my man! The car is stuck in gear i cant select any gears lol!

Right really need to UPDATE this ,

Still having issues and trying my best to check for problems in my spare time, car will not turn over, gearbox selects gears by hand on the gearbox itself but linkage jams when i put selector on? I have no idea why the car will not turn over, when i take the starter out it spins , put it back in and it cannot turn the engine over, i've had the engine running sounded sweet, put new clutch on thrust bearing is spot on clutch feels ace in the car, would an earth cause this to not attempt to start, not enough juice in the starter ? Running out of idea's !!

Also is there any sensor at all that would stop an engine from turning over?
  7. #7
if the earths arnt in correct place it wont even try 2 start i done the same once and thought oh shit then changed earths over and fired straight up
  8. #8
Yeah man i'm starting to think that could be my probs but a guy looked and said blah blah the starter works etc, but the gearbox earth and that might not be making great contact correct? But if the earths were not connected right would it make it difficult to crank by hand?
  9. #9
its difficult to turn flywheel by havnd best way to tur it is get a crow bar in that gap on top of bell housing and prying against the bell housing to turn flywheel i thought the same about it being hard to turn when i put my lightend flywheel on but thats just normal if it turns ant the starter moter is conecting then it should still run if it has recently ran unless some connections are wrong
  10. #10
I'm unsure about the sensors now as i really dont know where one or two go, but i assumed it would still turn over, but it doesnt, just thinking that a bad earth could be occuring, no idea about earths but i know the starter works, but when you turn the key to start it just does nothing just dies down and starter gets hot Should really try bumping it?
  11. #11
does it even turn over or does it just click
  12. #12
Just makes like a quick doof noise then goes quiet and the starter gets hot if you hold it on to try and start it
  13. #13
Lights on dash go dim when i hold the key on too..
  14. #14
how longs it been stood since last running
  15. #15
Linkages on correct? Change cables on correct ball joints? Check all connections to the battery and also that the battery hasnt been drained from constant cranking. All stupid little things but always worth a check, always start simple then gradually start looking at other things
  16. #16
Can you turn the engine by hand?
  17. #17
Snapped an engine/gearbox mount? Could cause the engine to sit on correctly and not turn

No the linkages weren't , the selector was rubbing hard when i put it on? Bougnt new kam racing linkages, but when they are off it should still start ok? Clean chassis earth and box earth no difference, maybe worth trying a different battery yes.

There is a bolt missing from the ecu mount would that make any difference? Just on 3 for temporary measure? 3/4 bolts in.

missing bolt on mounting wouldn't make any difference, theres 3 others there.

Thought as much, just cant get my head around how all of a suddent it wont even turn over and the starter works, but maybe its not giving out enough power? No idea, going to pack the shafts in tonight and push the car and hopefully it will free up the engine/box LOL.

UPDATE : Think i have found the problem! got sent a jp4 clutch and my engines an older shape j4 engine, so im guessing that because its the wrong clutch its jamming my engine correct?
  22. #22
Most possibly did you not find you had any problems fitting if you've got the wrong clutch?
  23. #23
It seemed to go on ok like, gearbox went on it fine, i'm assuming input shaft on jp4 and j4 are the same, ive read flywheel pattern is different, really quite sure its my problem now as everything was fine until i replaced the clutch, if anyone can back me up on this clutch.
  24. #24
does it try and turn over?
  25. #25
The clutches for the J4 and JP4 are different!

No matter whether it's the old or new J4 type flywheel pattern the JP4 clutch is still different! How, I don't really know. I'm assuming pressure plate by the sound of your problem.
  26. #26
Cheers pal, and no it wont turn over, the clutch im pretty sure is jamming my engine.
  27. #27
if its not trying to turn over id check the engine earth cable as i forgot to put mine back on and it wouldnt turn over
