Thrust release bearing is only working when the clutch is pushed in and so any sounds being made when the clutch in use will point to a bad clutch release bearing. Im having similar problem but mine doesnt make any knocking/banging sound when pulling off..

When was the last time you changed the entire clutch kit?

its got a recon box and new clutch in about 20k ago

does the knocking noise rise and fall with the revs??
  6. #6
yes wen you accelerate it speeds up with the revs

banging sounds like the diff isnt right. you sure its not just a rumble (release bearing)?

why? would a loose/improperly seated clutch release bearing cause ticking/knocking sounds when in neutral and clutch not pressed?

it sounds like somthing catching on a rotation if that makes sense sounds quite loud like wen a driveshft is knocking wen you turn but its wen you set off straight line and the knocking goes faster as you accelerate.

bumpppp dont wana buy a new box if its only the clutch??

Just wondering, when did the knocking start? did the knocking come about suddenly before it was working fine? When you say your hear knocking increasing with revs can you still hear it at fairly high engine speeds?

yh it was working fine then went over a speed bump which sempt to start it off yeh wen you accelerat it goes faster with the revs but you cant hear it so much in the higher gears

Why on earth would a mount cause that noise relative to the clutch? Its the input shaft bearing that needs replacing, costs about £10 to buy the part but hundreds to fit..

Seeing as its a reconned box and its just the input shaft bearings i would look at just replacing those rather than the whole gearbox. As to price im not sure how much gearbox specialists charge but its a fairly easy job for them to do.
