Improving safety in vtr

  1. #1
Hi there, I am after some advise on improving the safety in a saxo vtr, the reason for this I have had two friends that have died in the last two months in acidents I know there not the best cars. My dad wants me to improve the car in some way. He was suggesting either some bucket seats with harnesses and/ or a small roll cage.

I heard a close school friend driving a 106 crashed into a hilux and was died. Any advise would be great!

    Thanks Phil

Firstly condolences to your friends. Was the accidents there fault? How fast were they going? People will sustain injuries in any car if the accident is severe enough.

With a roll cage, you will have to check insurance companies because they may not insure you or will raise the price.

Personally I would fit larger brakes and get some good branded wider tyres if you haven't already for improved braking and handling.

I'm not sure if bucket seats improve safety, they just hold you better in corners and harsh braking, someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Most importantly, read the road ahead.

I had a friend who had an accident in his Corsa B and he fitted Cobra bucket seat IIRC and the police or somebody said if he didnt have the seats in it would have been alot worse he was fine and so was his girlfriend. So i'd say go for bucket seats

He is going to buy me some buckets and maby a half cage. How would I mount the straps for the bucket if i wanted to keep the rear seats?

if you have a half cage i dont think you will be able to use rear seats mate and id push for a full cage

You would have to get double release harnesses that can unclip behind the seat. This would mean that you couldn't use the harnesses if you had passengers in the car though. Won't have any rear reats if you go for a cage anyway.

for everyday road use, a cage 'can' be more dangerous as you wont drive everywhere with a helmet on and a nice metal bar across the side of your head might hurt.
also alot of companies wont insure you on a real cage until you are a cetain age.

thought about things like improving the braking, suspension and tyres?

I am afriad to say it, I have come to the conclusion I am changing the car to something better. I went to the crash site today to leave some flowers and I spoke to his parents who were in a wreck. I am moving onto something safer and stronger his car set on fire once there was inpact! We are looking to change to an audi a4 2.0l
