Gearbox Leaking

  1. #1
I just had my exhaust checked at Kwik Fit. While it was up on the ramp i thought id have a good look under the car i noticed the gearbox had a leak where the N/S Driveshaft goes into the gearbox. Im thinking it could be the seal or the bearings. if it is, is it a big job to do? and how could i check the gearbox oil?
    Cheers

You sure its not a leaking CV boot on the driveshaft? Best thing to do is clean all the oil leak up and double check where its actually coming from.

Doing the gearbox driveshaft seals isn't to hard and the seals only cost around £10 and you can get them off of ebay.

There's a guide somewhere on doing them on here that I used but you:

Undo the driveshaft nut's, easier with the car on the ground, if you have VTR/S wheels put the standard steely spare on as it has a hole in the middle and do 1 at a time. Just crack each nut off for now. They will be very tight.

Jack the car up and make it safe.

Drain the oil from the box.

    Undo the Driveshaft nut.

Undo the track rod end ball joint.

Undo the Intermediate bearing lock bolts if it's the driverside.

Undo the droplink from the strut.

Undo the lower suspension arm bolt and lever the strut from the arm.

Pull the strut out of the way.

Pull the driveshaft out the box.

Use a screw driver or seal removing tool to wrag the seal out.(If it's stuck screw a self tapper into the seal to help remove it but levering against the screws head)

Clean up the cavity with white spirit and a rag.

Oil the hole and put a bit of oil on the edge off the seal and fit the seal. The drivers side can be a pig to fit somtimes with the gearbox still in the car. I use a small rubber or hide mallet to tap the new seals in but I place the old seal over the top so I don't damage the new one.

Then rebuild everthing, Carefull when you push the driveshaft through the new seal put some oil on the driveshaft so it slips through easy.

    Hope this helps. Rez

    For future reference.

You don't need to undo the drive shaft nut to get the shafts out of the box. Or remove the track rod end from the strut.

The shaft can stay in the hub, just remove the droplink and lower balljoint from the strut. That will give you enough play to get the shaft out. Depending on your brake lines though, you may need to unbolt the caliper too.
