Rust Problems

I had some welding done on my Catalytic converter on my exhaust some time last year as the sheild had become loose due to it being lowered. Once the work was done and i picked up my keys the bloke from the Garage said your car is like a rust bucket on the complete under chassis. At the time I didn't take much notice and I just ignored it...

But recently the drivers seat has started making a creaking noise which has become more and more irratable. It has been doing it for approx 2 months, when i adjust the seat in certain positions it is fine, but all is not well. I traced the noise to one of the metal rods that holds the frame to the chassis and it is completly rusted around it and cracking badly.

I'm going to take it to my local garage for them to give me a professional opinion on whats best to do. Ideally i would like to remove all the rust where possible and fix the problem.

Has anyone experience problems with rust? Whats the solution? I'm not very good with DIY with cars but i know you cant weld new metal onto rust. Any help guys?

    Thanks

Thanks for the responses. I'm hoping it can be welded, going to the garage next month now as funds are non existant.

Just an update to say that the car has gone into "a friend of a friends" Garage today and the sensor which was appearing was the ABS warning light. Parts have been ordered and replaced, pretty straight forward.

As for the rust - The mechanic said it wasn't as bad as i'd thought and he had to gut a small section out and plate that bit but generally it was not too bad. The seat has been welded properly and the underside of the chassis has now been completly undersealed.

I'm looking at giving it some more TLC thought, as i think i've neglected it a bit recently- then again it is nearly 10 years old now.

I recently had a problem with me exhaust.. Had an advisory from last MOT saying its getting on a bit btu i left it and it got louder and louder (which tbf i liked hehe) but then i got home one night and looked under my car and the whole bloody back box was hanging on by a thread and wasnt actually attached to the rest of the exhaust cause it had rusted off
Had to replace the WHOLE exhuast cause apaz it had rusted down the whole length of it... On the plus, ive got a nice shiny new stainless steel one now
