I am due to purchase my 4th Rear beam this afternoon and can no longer rely on my faith in hummanity for the condition of a rear beam on these vehicles through peoples word when I ask them 'is there any play...' this approach has screwed me out of a lot of money.

    How can I go about assessing its condition;

In particular the play in the bearings, and in the radius arms.

    Tell tell signs needed really!

    Many thanks all!

Just save the heart ache and buy a recon beam

go and test the beam while its still on the car if you want a secondhand one, not easy to test for play once beam is off.

    IM Axle's are your friend.

Just fitted my 4th axle. Cost me £270 but it's a fully refurbed job

Remove hub nut, pull off hub with bearing. Refit new hub with bearing.

From what I've heard it's not worth the hassle trying to change just the bearing.

any idea of where the hub nut is exactly??

    cheers

There is a big allen key bolt dirrectly at the back of wheel the bearing sits, is this the bearing bolt? usually there is a cover on the front of the bearing and is there but doesn't seem to be a cover on the front??

    cheers for your help.

Right smack bang the middle of the hub. lol. Big fuck off thing. 32mm me thinks.

It has a dust cover over it which you have to remove first. Hammer and a screwdriver will prise it off no probs.

Is there any way of removing the stub of ov the axle.. being the bit the bearing is pressed to with the treads on it???

    thanks
  19. #19
    The stub pin?

Yes, needs to be pressed out. Give me a minute and I'll dig out a link for you regarding rebuilding a rear beam.

    http://www.205gtidrivers.com/article...rearbeamrefurb

It's a long read. But it explains exactly what is involved in refurbing a rear axle.

had a little read couldn't see what was looking for.

its the shaft bit where the bearing pushes over and has the threads on it to hold the bearing on.

    any clue's

    You mean the wheel bearing?

If so, I have no idea if it's part of the trailing arm or a press fit. I have a feeling it is a press fit but can't think of ever seeing a replacement part.

What do you mean by the part that has threads on it?

    You're loosing me... lol.

go to the link scroll down and it is number 1 on the first picture

I'm sure that part (part 1 in the picture) is one whole piece. The whole trailing would need replacing.

I'm not definite so would wait for a second opinion.
