Slide hammer is always my preferred method. You may just require a bigger one. Unless your getting to the point your snapping a good quality bolt of the end. Some people swear by making a home made pulley. I have done this a few times when I had no hammer to hand and it works ok so may be worth a try. Its also worth giving everything a good soak in plus gas or other such freeing agent. Failing that heat though you will normally have to replace the seals if you start going that drastic. Some people also try hitting one end of the bar whilst using a slide hammer on the other.

ok thanks for that , i mite try hittin the other end, is there a washer that has to be taken out on both sides in that case or just the 1 ?

You have to unscrew the screws from both end of the torsion bars and take out the two off set washers. Use some thing soft ish to hammer it out as you don't want to damage anything. Generally hammering would be my very last option as it had the most chance of going wrong.

Hammering is y preferred method by far over a slide hammer

Nothing bad can happen so long as you put a bolt in the end of the torsion bar

yee ive taken the 1 washer out of either side of the torsion bar and all 4 torque bits, soo spose its just a case of hitting away :-s
  7. #7
if you are going to hit the other end you will have to remove the cam shape washer from that end aswell, then put a small bolt in fully and get a bar to sit on the head of the bolt and beat it out, i find if you make the puller up one end using a socket it puts the bar under pressure then the beating the other end normally shifts it mate hope this helps

soo let me get this rite , to remove the upper torsion bar i put a bolt in the drivers side an hit it out the passanger side where i removed the washer from ???
  9. #9
ok thanks lads. wat a nitemare it is to get the washers out tho :-( , anyone wanna help lol ?
  10. #10
to remove the torsion bar that is closet to the front of the car you will need to remove both the cam washers in the ends of the bars, then use the socket puller on the passenger side of the bar and put a bolt in the drivers side and hit the head of the bolt from the drivers side

lol washers take like 30seconds to do, easy peasy. WD40, flat head screw driver to clean the shit out where the washer is gonna slide. Then get a bolt and use that to tap the washer out. Easy.

if its that easy cum and show me :-p haha

Then get a long bar, and a lump hammer and wack it out, 20 hits should see it out, unless your some hench ronnie coleman, but then id doubt he'd own a saxo..

I've been present at about 60+ torsion bar lowerings.

Some yes are easy and almost flop out, others have taken up to 40 minutes.

Where abouts in Birmingham are you located?

Have been lowering torsion bars regularly for over 2 years now and ther washers are potentially the most awkward part of the job.

Its been a very very long time since its took any more than a few minutes to get the torsion bars free.

Slide hammers and socket method are very inferior and can have very bad drawbacks

So what method would you suggest?

ive been usind a sledge hammer an a bolt 2day any1 near birmingham , erdington that could hep me pleaaseeee
  26. #26
    and a bar?
  27. #27
sit the bar on top off an axle stand so it is lined up and if need be get a mate to hold the bar while you hit it with the sledge hammer, make sure you have both washer out one from each end, cnt think of any other reason why it would come out mate
