It's a mystery, gearbox noise??????

    Hello

Got an unusual problem with a vtr. Have a noise coming from engine bay area. It as a sort of grinding, howling noise, comes and goes. Speed doesn't effect it, although the car has to be moving, putting the brakes on doesn't make any difference nor does dipping the clutch or taking it out of gear. Absolutely deafening, i do know that it's not the following as they have been replaced.

    Wheel bearings
    Clutch Kit inc thrust bearing
Timing Belt & water pump and it's definately not wind noise.
New disks & pads front & rear.
Complete new exhaust system inc CAT so not heat sheild.

Like I said really loud but whats odd is it did just disappeared 800 miles ago and is now back, sometimes when it's there give the car a bit of welly and the noise goes but not all the time :-(

If it's a gearbox bearing would the problem come and go? Any drive shaft issues? I really like my Saxo which is in excellent condition and relatively low mileage, but this is getting beyond a joke and seriously testing my belief in French Cars!!! ;-D

Should have bought a VW LOL

    Thanks

    Stephen

If it's the intermediate bearing on drive shaft, 'hear comes the daft question', does each shaft have a intermediate bearing or just drivers side?
