Important! : MK1 VTR driveshaft on MK2 VTR

  1. #1
Drivehsaft went on my 2001 Y reg VTR, will a MK1 driveshaft fit correctly, assuming they will as both are non-ABS?

    Thanks

It will fit but not correctly and will therefore eat through wheel bearings rather quickly.

Ah, so MK2's are tapered and MK1's are not.

yup, not too sure on the very early mk2s though..its quite easy to check anyway.

Easiest way to check whilst still on the car is to whip your wheel off and have a look at the size of the driveshaft nut.

left side is flat and uses a smaller nut. right side is tapered using the larger nut

Thats quickest and easiest way of checking without removing everything. Y reg falls within the random cross over year category so dont just assume that because its Mk2 in appearance that itll also have mk2 parts.

Both types of driveshaft will fit into the gearbox so that end is no problem.

You would need to swap over both the hub and bearing from one to the other to use the different shafts so its cheaper and easier to get the correct parts first time round
