Ignition barrel
-
#1
went to turn off my car today and my key got jammed in the ignition, tried for ages getting it out, had to get the RAC out, in the end i yanked the key out but then the ignition is still on and stays on even when i turn the key nothing happens, so i think i need a new ignition barrel, is it easy to take out and replace? and are they expensive?
thanks

#2Oh and forgot to say, RAC jumped my car so I could drive it home but it felt like the power steering wasn't working, what could this be?
-
#3You can get a replacement ignition barrel but you will have to keep both sets of keys one to open the dor/lock (the old key) and the new key to start the car however an ecu configeration may be needed as even though its a simple clip in and clip out the ECU will want only the old key code. Unless you get the key code changed on the key however dont think its possible or ECU reset. either way its not going to be cheap as the ignition sytem are desned not to be hot wired anymore. And old key may fit into new igntion barrel but the codes are differant and thats what stops it.
Here is a ignition barrel and key set to get you started:
Cheap set:

More expensive but probs more benafitial set:

but you will need to get into touch with an auto electrican garage or Mnic motors to get diagnostic and upgrade jobs done on the ECU. Good luck Buddy lets kno how you get on

#4thanks alot for the help mate, iv ordered the first one u put up. could any1 help- am i right in sayin if i take the chip out of the top of the old key and put it in the new key, everything will be fine? is this an easy job to do?
-
#5Its a mess on mate, i need to do that for my remote engine start. Just take your old key or spare in for a re-cut with imobiliser probs looking £20.
Or you can put it in the new key their is a guy here who does this were you put the chip in the blank key. ill have a quick look ........ -
#6Look at post 1 and them read post 5 it confirms you take the chip out and put it in with the battery in the new one
-
#7oh right so you can just put the old key chip into the new key? with a new barrel and it will work? no messing around with the ecu? which posts am i looking at mate? thanks again
-
#81 and 4 and just remembered your replacing the keys. Is their no way uou can use the old barral still cos you could use old barral and chip from old key in new that would work. If you install the new barral you will need to use the keys proveded. But to open the fuel tank is the old key. So unless you have a spare its a pickle
-
#9oh right yeah i understand
and nope i dont think so, its collasped =/ the key just keeps turning in it
yeah i have a spare key, so i was thinking, use the old key to open doors and fuel cap and new to start the ignition? would that be okay? if i put the old chip into the new key?
-
#10No if you have spare key its fine, use spare key for fuel tank and doors and when you receive the new ignition barrel it HAS to include the keys. Lable them so you dont get mixed up and with the keys provided use that to start the car. The only thing stopping the car from starting is the code on the chip in the corisponding key. Yuor old spare key is usless to the new barral. so DONT remove the chip from it. It just means now you will have to use seperate keys as apose to having one. However try using the new keys provided on the fuel tank you might be ok with that but doors might want the old keys. But try that too no harm in trying worst senario it wont work. But if your like me a worry freak id get a spare of the old spare key lol

#11thankss alot mate, you've bin a massive help! il give it ago tomorrow when i recieve the bits
i was just worried it may cost alot to fix but i think it should be okay
thanks again

#14Never dealt with this myself, all the above seems a bit of ball ache of a job.
Can't help but think, would it not be easier just removing the immobilisor with the car running to unlock the ECU then just fit a new ignition barrel & key?
Can someone confirm the above before anyone does it. As that seems a more simple way around this. -

#20This can be done but a chew on and alot of the time you don't need to go to the extreme of ecu and ignition barrel replacement. You don't even need to change the ecu as your key codes are not stores there. In Simon case this cant be done but the clarify this comment, yes it is OK to do this, but at an expense.Quote:Never dealt with this myself, all the above seems a bit of ball ache of a job.
